Waterways app is a fun, playful, tactile, self-directed, engaging, multisensory emotional support tool that promotes well-being and helps people ages 6 and up relieve stress and manage their mood using soothing nature imagery and audio. Waterways app was created by a licensed professional counselor with a master’s degree in art therapy and almost 20 years of counseling experience. Working full-time for 3 years as a counselor and social worker in a men’s prison, the creator realized that a simulated nature activity could provide a soothing experience for people unable to get out in nature, and those needing convenient emotional support. The creator of the app has worked in school settings, home-based, day treatment, residential treatment, corrections, early childhood, and private practice. In a 2022 pilot study, Waterways app was recommended by the clinical director of the counseling department of a major U.S. university, an integrative health pediatrician, an early childhood education supervisor, health coaches, school counselors, a nurse practitioner at a withdrawal crisis facility, a social worker at a withdrawal crisis facility, a first responder, a psychiatrist, EMDR therapists working in private practice and parents of children and teens. Waterways app promotes self-directed mental training, introspection, mood management, frustration tolerance, constructive states of mind, breathwork, impulse control, attention, management of distractions, management of addictions, self-awareness, self-reflection, emotion regulation and prosocial behavior.
